Born in Montevideo in 1962, Yamandú Cuevas showed a marked vocation for drawing and painting from an early age. Of a private leaning, the artist declares how much he prefers solitary living when in a period of drawing and painting, his favorite arts. Deferring to this instinct for introspection and focus helped the artist for the five years he spent tutoring art to children at the (hectic!) Castle Workshop in Montevideo. From this early experience, Cuevas went on to assist at the Dr. Pedro Figari School of Arts, in order to further study drawing and painting, serigraphy, sculpture and graphic design. Cuevas would then enter the world of advertising, spending 25 years as an animator, illustrator, designer and scenographer, until he would end up on creative teams in some of the most prestigious ad firms in the world – Grey Uruguay and Leo Burnet, among others. All the while, Cuevas’ own personal art was evolving until he established his own studio “Ranchoaparte". |
